From Office Cleaner to Laptop Technician - Cynthia's Story

When Cynthia first joined DEED Technologies in Nairobi, she was hired as the office cleaner. But as she mopped floors, she kept watching the technicians repair laptops and wondered, “Could I do that?”

One day, she approached DEED co-founder Edwin Wagura and said simply, “I think I can do more here.” Expecting her to be interested in sales or marketing, Edwin was surprised when Cynthia said, “I want to do the technical work.”

Edwin agreed and started training Cynthia from the very beginning, teaching her how a laptop works and what’s inside. She was eager to learn, often asking Edwin to review material again until she fully understood. After months of study, hands-on practice, and shadowing senior technicians, Cynthia became one of DEED’s most precise and methodical team members. “In one year, she’s picked up what others take three years to master,” Edwin says. “She’s so hungry to learn.”

In Cynthia’s own words:

“Before, I used to depend on others. Now I depend on myself. I can understand the technical conversations that I used to just overhear. And when I’m with my family, I can lead more. DEED has given me confidence I never thought I would have."

The Ripple Effect of Entrepreneurship

At Sinapis, we train entrepreneurs like Edwin not because they are in poverty themselves, but because of the exponential impact their businesses can create and ultimately serve those who are.

In Kenya, research shows that one formal job sustains an average of five individuals in that household. As DEED continues to grow, dozens of employees like Cynthia will finally be able to earn a livable wage and support their families. As the company expands its supply chain, hires contractors, and creates opportunities, that ripple will spread to hundreds more.

Founded by Edwin and Dennis Bett, DEED is an alumni of three Sinapis programs: the Entrepreneur Academy in 2017, the Fast Track Accelerator in 2021, and Ascent in 2024. It was during the Ascent program, through a Kingdom Impact exercise, that Edwin first identified the opportunity to train team members like Cynthia internally.

Through their participation in the program, they’ve also refined a bold vision: to be the largest computer hardware solutions provider in East Africa by 2035. Part of this plan includes scaling their internal technician training program, creating many more stories like Cynthia’s. As Edwin puts it, “Business has to be bigger than profit. It’s about stewardship and helping people become who God has called them to be.”

This is what Sinapis exists to do. We equip entrepreneurs to build businesses that create jobs, lift families out of poverty, and multiply impact for God’s kingdom. Cynthia’s story is just one of many: a vivid reminder that behind every growing business are lives forever changed.
